AWS Glue: A Comprehensive Guide
AWS Glue is a powerful cloud-based ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) service provided by Amazon Web Services. It’s designed to simplify the process of data preparation and analysis. Getting Started with AWS Glue
Step 1: Setting Up Your AWS Account
Firstly, visit the AWS Website, [https://aws.amazon.com/] you need to create an AWS account with your personal information.
Step 2: Navigating to AWS Glue Service
After creating your account, then you will go to the AWS console, you are logged into the AWS Management Console, there are two main ways to access AWS Glue:
Option 1: Using the Search Bar Look for the search bar at the top of the AWS Management Console.
Type “AWS Glue” into the search bar. As you type, suggestions will appear.
Select AWS Glue from the dropdown suggestions. This will take you directly to the AWS Glue service console.
Option 2: Using the Services Menu Click on the “Services” menu at the top left of the AWS Management Console. This menu lists all the AWS services categorized by domain.
Navigate to the “Analytics” category. AWS services are grouped under categories like Compute, Storage, Database, etc. AWS Glue is under the “Analytics” category.
Select “AWS Glue” from the list of services under Analytics. This will take you to the AWS Glue dashboard.
Step 3: Creating a Data Catalog
Next step, need to create a Database first before you can add Tables.
Under the AWS Glue console, you need to select the ‘Databases’ option in the Data Catalog section.
Click on ‘Add Database’. You’ll be prompted to enter details for the new database.
Fill in the Database Information:
Database Name: descriptive name. Description (Optional): description for the database. Location (Optional): the path where your data is stored.
Click ‘Create’ to finalize the creation of your database.
After creating a Database, you can add Tables that define the schema of your data.
Fill in the Table Details:
Table Name: Give your table a name. Database: Select the database you created from the dropdown. Classification: Specify the format of your data (e.g., JSON, CSV, Parquet). Columns: Define the columns for your table along with the data type for each column.
Then you will be good.
Step 4: Defining Crawlers
Sign in to your AWS Management Console and open the AWS Glue service.
On the AWS Glue Console, under the Data Catalog section, click on “Crawlers.”
Click on the “Add crawler” button to start the crawler setup.
Configure Crawler Settings Name Your Crawler: Provide a name for your crawler. Choose a Data Store: Select the data source type (e.g., Amazon S3, JDBC, etc.) and specify the path to your data. I usually use AWS S3, it is efficient. Choose an IAM Role: Select or create an IAM role that AWS Glue can use to access your data. IAM role is important for the access. Configure Crawler’s Schedule: Choose how frequently the crawler should run - on demand, or on a schedule. Configure Output: Select or create a database in your Data Catalog where the crawler’s metadata tables will be stored.
Step 5: Running and Monitoring ETL Jobs
After all the elements setted up, you could create your own Glue ETL job to operate your data, with your sepecific fucntions!
